Birding the Samish Flats

This weekend I had the opportunity to bird the Samish Flats with the North Cascades Audubon Society. Our primary focus was on finding raptors, and we found lots of them!

My favorite find was the American kestrel, they are the smallest raptor in North America and some consider it to be the most colorful as well.

A red tailed hawk in flight.

The bald eagles were everywhere, this one is eating something, possibly a duck!

There was plenty of food around, yet sometimes it's easier to have someone else catch the food and chase them away from it! There were four or five eagles fighting over a piece of food, these two seem to be fighting over one bite!

Eleven eagles are in this tree, one more is flying around.

Snow geese in the field, with a lone (trumpeter) swan in front.

Snow geese coming in to land on the field.
